Production

The Great Plains Synfuels Plant: North Dakota is home to the only coal-based energy facility in the world that captures its carbon dioxide emissions at commercial scale--115 MMSCF or 6,750 tons per day--and stores them permanently underground by piping the gas to Saskatchewan for use in enhanced oil recovery. Basin Electric, through its for-profit subsidiary, Dakota Gasification Company (Dakota Gas), owns and operates the plant, located northwest of Beulah, ND.

Recovered Energy Generation: The use of hot exhaust gases from existing natural gas-fired compressor stations located along the Northern Border Pipeline to generate electricity. Four generating stations, with a total generation capacity of 22 megawatts, are located near St. Anthony, ND, and near Wetonka, Clark and Estelline in South Dakota. This recovered energy generation project has minimal environmental impact, with “zero to near zero” emissions for the additional power produced from the waste heat that was previously untapped. The stations are owned by Ormat Technologies, Inc.. Basin Electric purchases the electricity produced and integrates that power with its other generating facilities. The energy provided from the project is enough to serve the electrical needs of about 5,000 average residential homes.

Legislation

Xcel Energy: Commitment to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and global warming and backing draft legislation in Congress requiring electric companies to acquire 20 percent of their power from nonpolluting sources by 2025

Organization

North Dakota Renewable Energy Partnership (NDREP): A coalition of industry representatives, producers, government officials, legislators, and nonprofits, the Partnership "promotes ethanol, biodiesel, wind and biomass energy production in North Dakota through development and expansion of markets for renewable energy and through support of state and federal legislation enhancing the industry. " A North Dakota Energy Survey is found on the NDREP website.
